ECG's and Rhythms 2 (Preview)

Description

Clinical Scenario
nYou have commenced working in an acute care area where patients are routinely attached to cardiac monitors.
nOne of your patients suddenly becomes hypotensive & short of breath and you notice her heart rate has increased to 180/minute.
nYou rush to get the defibrillator but other staff indicate this is not required and calmly ask the patient to give several strong coughs.
nTo your amazement the rhythm returns to normal and the patient’s haemodynamic status improves.
nYou are informed that the rhythm was from the atria and thus was not life threatening - and realise you need further education on how to identify specific arrhythmias and their significance.
On completion of this module you should be able to:
  • nAppreciate nursing responsibilities in relation to identifying cardiac rhythms and their basic management;
  • nConfidently identify Sinus Rhythm and its variations;
  • nGain an understanding of the mechanisms, precipitating causes and likely haemodynamic effects of arrhythmias;
  • nClassify & describe arrhythmias using accepted terminology;
  • nUse a systematic approach to analyse rhythms; and
  • nIdentify common arrhythmias and outline their likely management

This recently written topic by ARC committee member Heather Schubert, represents the second part of a two topic series.

The assessment comprises a challenging 10 question quiz which varies each time you attempt it. You can review your marked quiz after each attempt to aid the learning process.
